Bryce
Canyon National Park does not contain one main
canyon, but rather a dozen smaller ravines eroded into
the east side of a ridge running approximately
north-south at the edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in
south west Utah. This erosion has resulted in thousands
of bizarre and fragile rock formations in many subtle
shades of pink, white, yellow and red. The Park is named
after Ebenezer Bryce, a farmer who was the first
modern-day settler in the region.

Located close to
I-15 near Cedar City, Cedar Breaks
National Monument is a steep bowl-shaped cliff face
eroded in the west side of the Markagunt Plateau, quite
similar to Bryce Canyon, with colourful rock strata and many
strange rock shapes. The access road (UT 148) circles the
cliff edge from which the spectacular limestone formations
can be seen, extending 2,000 feet downwards and 3 miles
across. Hiking is limited; there are no trails down the
cliff face, but short walks around the rim, through pine
forests, lead to several alternative viewpoints. So, there
is not much to do but this would be a pleasant, restful
place to camp for a while in the summer.

Zion National Park
encompasses some 150,000 acres of wild canyon country east
of St. George, Utah, including the narrow, multicoloured
Kolob Canyons to the north and many miles of largely
impenetrable mountain wilderness. However, the vast majority
of visitors come only to see
Zion Canyon, probably the most immediately spectacular
of the many geological wonders in Utah - sheer red and white
sandstone cliffs tower up to 2,500 feet above the North Fork
of the Virgin River, and gradually become closer together
upstream until only 30 feet apart in places.
